POSTMODERNISM

A. Postmodern art- art that mocks modern art, it promotes parody, irony and humor to get a concept across. it also uses past movements for infulence.

B. Feminism is considered postmodern art because feminist art revolves around womens rights and being equals with men. much of feminist artwork depicts women in positions of men in many different humorous or ironic ways

C. Lorna Simpsons work is considered postmodern art because it revolves around blacks and past problems fitting in with white culture or society.

Formalism

a. Formalism to me is basically just making art because an artist wants to make art. There is'nt any reason or concept behind the art. I believe that the art is possibly a way for the artist to explore new ideas and different medias of art.

b. After looking at the works of Mondrian, Kandinsky, and Malevich; I feel that the artist that has work related the closest to my definition is Malevich. I think that his style of art is more widely expressiv as far as different styles. All of Kandinskys work seemed too much alike and each painting seemed to carry over to the next too much. Mondrians work was close to my definition but it seemed to have the same faded look and didnt seem like there was much exploration with different styles or brush strokes.

c. when I look at Mondrians work i see a constant repetition. For this reason I feel that this work relates to formalism because is seems like Mondrian did most of this art because he found a certain style that he liked and stuck with it. it seems that he was making this work just because he liked the process and wanted to create the specific art.

d. Paul Rothenstein is the artist that I chose. I see his art comparing to mine because it is colorful and the line work seems fun.

EXPRESSIONISM

A. Expressionism is basically an art movement that deals with altering objects in an artist’s approach. The art can be changed by altering the colors, or the forms of the objects.
Cognitivism is more about whether an issue is true or false.

B. Leo Tolstoy views sees art as a way for people to express themselves in a visual way. He thinks that people respond to art in a way that in a way that may persuade them to help others and become more aware of the way people respond and their feelings toward certain issues.

C. According to Collingwood, the artist and the viewer have certain roles that make art possible. He sees the viewer is the addition that exposes the art for what it really is. For the art itself to work, the viewer must use their imagination. His main motive is to make the viewer use their minds to create the image, story or feelings that are presented before them.

D. What I got from the reading about Louis Bourgeois was that due to her past she was affected in a way that her art portrays her thoughts. The metaphors that she made apparent to me were that she felt caged and secluded in an uncomfortable environment. I feel that Kiki Smith has a sense of relating women with powerful positions and that women are capable of many things.

E. Cristi Rinklin I feel is the artist that has a similar style to my work for this project. I really like the vibrant color that she uses in her pictures and the wild shapes that are beautiful. She also talks in her artist summary about her forms which are beautiful but also have a negative meaning behind them.

A. Realism- I believe that realistic art is a representation of something real. It doesn’t necessarily have to be exact but if it looks real on paper or another form I would classify it as a realistic image. When a drawing, painting or whatever the art may be is detailed, and the lines show great value is when something looks a lot more realistic.
B. Plato defined good art as actuality. A good work of art must engage someone emotionally, and a person should be able to identify art and know that it is beautiful.
C. I think that Plato would see Koons art as beauty because of the realism. i feel that because of the explicit nature of the work he would hate it. Koon likes to portray the human body and he likes to make recognizable pieces of art.
D. Aristotle would define good art as size, order, proportion, harmony, symmetry and even functionality. He also believed that art is perceived as it is intended. If it was supposed to be a beautiful piece most people see the beauty that the artist put in the work.
E. I believe that obscene is not a contradiction of terms because there are some people and even instances that someone would feel that a work of art is repulsive to them.
F. I think that sexual images are just as obscene as a person makes them. Each person is raised differently. Some people may be offended by many things while others are more open minded and see the beauty in a piece of work rather than just the content. Of course the content is a very important part of the work but I feel that the focal point is more important. To look past the importance of the message or the concept that the artist is trying to get across is a problem, I fell that it is important to at least try to understand what the art is saying before judgment is passed.
G. I really didn’t find anyone on the drawing center that I liked for this project but I did like Michael Ray Charles, an artist Amy told me about. In this project I wanted to use the identity and humor terms. This artist likes to create black super heroes and my project revolved around trying to portray myself as a black superhero by abstracting my features more to pull out my African American side of my genetic pool.

assignment 1 beauty vs repulsion

2a
I believe that “good art” is something that is aesthetically pleasing to the individual. Mostly I think that not only visually but a person should connect on a mental or emotional level with the art. Something that I may see as good or great art may not be to another. I personally like surrealism and the artist Salvador Dali because his work is original. So “The Persistence of Time,” (http://www.msdlists.com/surrealism/images/full%20size/Dali%20Persistence%20of%20Time.jpg ), is a piece that I think of when “good art” is announced in a conversation. I really like the way that Dali applies the color, and also how he combines many “real life” sceneries (mountains) with a surreal twist; i.e. melting clocks, or non proportioned bodies/ parts.

When I think of “bad art,” some styles of abstract art pop in my mind. I don’t visually or emotionally connect with art that seems chaotic to me. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it as art, just not a type that I like. (http://www.modernartimages.com/images/abstract/abstract-art-painting-truemelody.jpg )
This piece, “True Melody,” by Chidi Okoye, I really don’t see anything melodious about it. It is out of order and basically looks nothing like “good art” to me. Basic colorants and simple shapes makes it a visually non appealing piece of art.

2b
When I think of honorific art, I think of art that has made the foundation for art today. The masters of art such as Leonardo Davinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Vincent Van Gogh and many others, I think their work is viewed as honorific art. It abides by many of the aesthetics that most art revolves around and is in my opinion beautiful.

2c
Classificatory art to me seems to be art that is art because someone just said that it is, and not because it technically is art. It doesn’t necessarily follow any certain guidelines of art.

2d
I am actually pretty comfortable with aesthetics. In order to achieve aesthetics a person must bring the beauty out in their work by communicating with the viewer. Even though I might be comfortable with it, a way to even be more comfortable is to view work and try to see what the artist was trying to get across with their work. Reading the artist statement could also help.

2e
I would probably say that Jean-Marcs “Blazing Saddles” is probably the type of art that my project will most relate to. It has a humoristic truth to it, I do want to get a point across with my piece and do it with a funny truth approach.

beauty vs repulsion

Beauty: Doesnt have to be visual. Feelings of happiness, excitement, or even anticipation. Things
that are unique to a person, or that make a person who they are. Somethings that I
really see a beautiful are, Pottery and the one of a kind aspect it has. I also see marriage
especially because it shows commitment of two people to one another.

Repulsion: is something that is very non appealing to a person. For me taking things for granted, abuse, selfishness, and ignorance really give me an uneasy feeling. it also can be visually something that may turn someones stomach, and even an emotional gut/ heart wrenching emotion.
